Who Can Benefit?

We each have a unique history of our bodies. Whether you work construction, guide river trips, work behind a desk, climb, bike or paddle we all put daily stress and demands on our structure. Maybe you fell off a ladder years ago and now you just don’t run as much because of a mysterious pain in your low back…Or you’re thinking about moving up into an administrative position at your guiding company because your body just can’t handle a full season in the field anymore…Or now that you’re a desk jockey the pain and chronic tension in your neck just doesn’t make mountain biking as enjoyable as it used to be. Perhaps you have low back pain or sciatica from stooping over your patients, or garden, or children or grandchildren. We all accumulate these “knick-knacks” throughout our lives that take our bodies out of optimal alignment in the field of gravity. We find ways to accommodate and compensate for these structural misalignments that result in whole-body patterns that are not as efficient as they could be. This requires energy just to remain upright in gravity that could otherwise be used for pursuing your goals in work or play, or simply living.

Through working with the myofascial networks of the body with its intricate and interwoven connections with the nervous system, Rolfing can help bring ease to patterns of strain within the body and change motor patterns by altering perception and coordination. When our motor patterns become “corrupted code” due to prior injury, illness, attitude or perception; that may present as conditions such as chronic pain, sciatica, tendonitis or thoracic outlet syndrome. While Rolfers do not diagnose or “fix” problems, (the client does the healing) the change in perception and coordination can bring relief to many of these conditions. Rolfing works with different levels of touch, always working at the layer that is available for change within a clients’ body. Because of its holistic approach, Rolfing can also help to down-regulate the sympathetic “fight-or-flight” nervous system which can relieve issues people face with chronic stress such as tension headaches, sleeplessness and anxiety.

A lifetime spent landscaping, trail building and massive amounts of outdoor rec. has taken its toll on my body. I have had low back, shoulder, ankle and knee injuries at one time or another that have now become chronic. Low back pain has been a consistent friend for 40 years. I have turned to physical therapy and chiropractic to deal with these injuries. The results have been mixed to good but care has been pretty continual to maintain that level.

To improve function for my aging body I felt like I needed to try something different so I signed up for a 10s series with Katie. I couldn’t be happier with her care or the results. Her care was professional and kind. She is very skilled at adjusting body parts gently and has a knack for finding the root of a problem quickly.

The results were equally impressive. In my case, Katie was addressing chronic pain or weakness which has reduced significantly or disappeared. In addition, I have experienced significant improvement in balance and function. Exercise and dance feel easier and I feel far less injury prone. By looking at total body function Katie was able to change my biomechanics. Every day I notice small changes that make me happy. My only regret is that I didn’t find this care earlier in my life.”

“As a massage therapist I am critical of the bodywork done on me. Katie had a good intuition that allowed her to apply just the right amount of pressure to make changes in my body without discomfort to me. I always got off the table feeling like I had more space in and around my muscles. If anything ever felt off after the work, Katie would make additional small adjustments based on my movement patterns. My biggest takeaway from her work is the improvement to my gait. Months later I am still walking better than I have for years. Katie has great attention to detail and made the Rolfing experience both relaxing and comfortable. “
